France Road Atlas from Michelin presenting their mapping at 1:200,000 in an A3 spiral-bound format, with 50 street plans, plus a special section listing over 300 restaurants, hotels and guesthouses “to fit every budget or taste”.
The country’s road network is presented in detail, graded according to width. Motorways indicate toll sections, with junctions showing full or limited interchanges. Driving distances are shown on many local routes and the maps also indicate steep gradients, height restrictions, bridge load limits, restricted or prohibited entry routes, speed cameras, etc. Dangerous or difficult sections are highlighted, as are scenic routes and viewpoints. The maps also show the country’s railway network with stations and ferry routes to the islands.
Interesting locations are discretely annotates with star rating and a range of small symbols indicate some other places of interest but the mapping is not primarily designed to highlight tourist sights. An overprint highlights cycle tracks selected by the Association Française des Véloroutes et Voies Vertes, and also marked are major GR long-distance hiking routes. Topography is indicated by relief shading with peak heights, passes and names of various mountain ranges, etc. Boundaries of national or regional parks are prominently marked. Also indicated are departmental and regional administrative boundaries. The maps have no geographical coordinates. The atlas is indexed and has an enlargement covering the outskirts of Paris,
This version of the atlas also includes:
- A 19-page section listing the publisher’s selection of over 300 restaurants, hotels and guesthouses grouped by region.
- 50 street plans of city centres, highlighting main routes and indicating one way streets. Only principal streets are named and listed in an index.
- A 4-page section on Road Safety in France which includes information from speed limits and regulations to school holiday dates in different regions.
- A route planning map
- A 14-page section showing locations of motorway services annotated with petrol brands and various facilities available in each one.
- Distance and driving times tables
All the text throughout the atlas is in English.
