These nine maps are reproductions of maps which were originally published by the Ordnance Survey in book form in the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The previous sixty years had seen the greatest period of industrial development with the rapidly expansion of towns and cities and the construction of the railway network. However, as these maps show there were still villages and country estates where now there we find urban sprawl, industrial estates, major roads and new towns. Detail includes villages, forests, hills, rivers, railways, canals, ferries, offshore sandbanks and selected bathymetric contours. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 10' and 5' intervals respectively.
These maps provide a fascinating insight into the past and each is accompanied by a booklet briefly describing various aspects of the country at the time eg. government, population & health, industry, advances in science.
