The topographic survey at 1:50,000 is published by the Servicio Geográfico del Ejército (the military survey organisation) and covers the whole of mainland Spain, the Baleares and the Canary Islands. The maps are ideal for walkers as they show footpaths and bridleways. Relief is shown by contours at 20-metre intervals, spot heights and some hill shading. Each sheet covers approximately 27x18 km (16x11 miles). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, with margin ticks for latitude and longitude at 5' intervals. Map legend is in Spanish, though the new editions also have English.

Since mid-1990 SGE has been rapidly updating this series, with the revised editions published in a new cartographic style. Most of the sheets for Andalusia, for example, have been recently revised.
