Rough Guide "Directions" guides are compact guides to major tourist destinations, either regions or cities. Ideal for short breaks, these highly practical guides cover all the principal areas and town within a region, or all the principal neighbourhoods within a city. Each area, town or neighbourhood section contains concise listings for what to see and do, as well as selected restaurant, café, shop & nightlife listings. Some background information to history & culture is also given in each section. City guides also include sections on nearby areas & excursions.

City guides contain a dedicated Accommodation section - in regional guides, accommodation listings are given within each area or town listing. Each guide begins with an Ideas section, listing the top sights, activities and events for a variety of themes and tastes. An "Essentials" section at the back lists practical visitor, transport and travel information, seasonal events information, some general historical background, and a short section of essential phrases and language tips.

Each guide features Rough Guides’ celebrated street mapping in colour for small areas throughout, and many guides include larger fold-out city maps on the inside covers.

Containing the best of their larger siblings, the full Rough Guides, "Directions" guides are best suited to shorter trips of around a week or less.
