Encapsulated version of the standard size, 111 x 77.5cm (3ft 8" x 2ft 6" approx.) Atlantic centred National Geographic Society’s “Classic” political map of the world with the publisher’s characteristic lay-out, countries defined by different colour borders and a wealth of additional information.
Subtle relief shading is added to show the topography. Peak heights on land are given in feet, ocean depths are shown in metres. The coastline of the Antarctic is particularly vividly presented. Within USA and Canada internal state and provincial boundaries are marked.
The map provides a lot of information often not included on political maps of the world. On oceans arrows indicate direction of the prevailing winds, as well as of hot and cold currents, many with names. Four insets show the Arctic and the Antarctic, plus vegetation/land use and population density world maps.
Clocks show time difference from GMT (but without the map indicating the exact geographical area covered by each time zone). The map also provides a list of 10 largest countries by area and by populations. Projection is Winkel Tripel, which reduces distortion of land masses as they near the poles.
- This map is also available on paper or framed, plus in other sizes or formats:
- standard size Pacific centred (116.5 x 77.5cm / 3ft10" x 2ft 6"), on paper or encapsulated
- enlarged Atlantic centred (178 x 123cm / 5ft 9" x 4ft approx.), on paper, encapsulated or framed
- extra large Atlantic centred 3-sheet set (279 x 193 cm / 9ft 2" x 6ft 4” approx.), on paper or encapsulated
LAMINATED and ENCAPSULATED WALL MAPS:
- laminated wall maps have a thin layer of plastic usually applied to the printed side only. They can be written on with suitable marker pens without any damage to the map but, unless they have been laminated on both sides, they are not damp-proof.
- encapsulated wall maps are sealed between two sheets of plastic. They are more rigid and heavier than laminated maps of the same size. They are damp-proof and do not crinkle in humid conditions. Encapsulation gives the map a shiny surface, similar to being displayed behind glass.
- please note: many publishers and retailers often use these two terms interchangeably. Our map titles and descriptions follow the definitions provided above.
