The Terrestrial Armillary Sphere by Authentic Models - a renowned maker of quality reproduction historical globes - truly stands out from the crowd.
The armillary sphere was invented by Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BC to demonstrate the motion of the stars around the Earth. Traditionally the armillary sphere consisted of a series of graduated metal rings - representing the equator, ecliptic, meridians and parallels - with a small sphere representing Earth at its centre. Before the advent of the European telescope in the 17th century, the armillary sphere was the prime instrument of all astronomers in determining celestial positions.
In this modern interpretation the sphere is replaced with the stunning 22cm (9") 1921 Weber-Costello reproduction globe, surrounded by a series of graduated rings constructed of quality light gauge bronze, and mounted on a solid wood base. The Terrestrial Armillary Sphere successfully combines the intrigue of an armillary sphere with the elegance of a well-crafted reproduction globe, making it a striking addition to the office or home.
