The Haute Route: Chamonix-Zermatt

Once the reserve of only the most determined Alpinists, lifts, huts and modern equipment have opened this route up to any reasonably fit and competent hill-walker. This guide covers the classic route, six variations, and many other minor route options. Along with detailed route descriptions there are route diagrams, sketches of the main mountain ascents, with the routes superimposed, and detailed descriptions for finding the huts in bad weather.

Institute Géographique National, French national survey organization, is renowned for their excellent series of 3-D plastic maps, including a spectacular map of the Mont Blanc massif at 1:50,000 of both the horizontal and, unsusually for such maps, the vertical scale. Coverage of the whole of the French Alps is available at a variety of scales. Unfortunately, due to frequent damage in transit to our customers, we are unable to offer these maps on our website.
