Through the French Canals by David Jefferson, now in its twelfth edition from Adlard Coles Nautical, is a comprehensive guide to the inland waterways of France, combining essential general information with practical instructions for over fifty routes.
The opening 64 pages provide essential information on choosing the right boat and equipments, the rules and regulations of waterway traffic including navigational signs and vocabulary, technical tips for operation of locks, etc. Also provided are recommendations on how best to take advantage of the extensive network of France’s navigable waterways to plan longer routes, e.g. across the whole country from the Channel to the Mediterranean or circular trips within north-eastern part of the country.
The second part of the guide is divided into nine regional sections describing and illustrating over 50 routes. Each route is presented as a table providing details of hazards, facilities and points of interest with the corresponding PK (pointe kilometrique) reference numbers, accompanied by a more general description of the route and the necessary information on boat dimensions, speed limits, opening times of locks, etc.
