"Tibet" is a photographic book par excellence, truly awe-inspiring sinply through it's stunning photograpgy. The spine of the book follows the longer side of the page, yet the pages are turned vertically, like a calendar or even a Tibetan prayer book. The result is a heady sense of space and flatness even when mountains and hills are part of the panoramas.
All photos are by Jaroslav Poncar, a Prague-born photographer that has been a professor in photographic engineership in Cologne since 1973. He has travelled extensively through Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Arab world and the Himalayas, all along carrying his Russian FT-2 panorama camera. In 1985 he became the first European to cross Tibet from East to West.
The text accompanying the photos is by John Keay, an authority on south, central and south-east Asia, author of Explorers of the Western Himalayas, The Honourable Company, a history of the East India Company, recently India: A History and his latest book, The Great Arc, about how the Himalayan peaks were first measured.
