Alison Raju’s Cicerone guide to Via de la Plata takes in the southern pilgrim route of the Way of St James from Seville and Granada up to Santiago. The route is almost 1000 km long and leads north and then north-west through the historic towns and varied scenery of Extremadura, Castille and Galicia. Most of it is also suitable for mountain (though not touring) bikes. It is the only published guide to include the Granada-Merida section of the route.
The guide is organized into five main sections – from Seville and Granada to Merida, Merida to Zamora, Zamora to Astorga, the Route via Puebla de Sanabria and Ourense and then to Santiago – with each stage including information about accommodation and refreshments at exact distances along the route. A detailed introduction includes information on the history and background of the Via de la Plata, topography, economy and language, an equipment checklist and other useful practical information on completing the route. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by sketch diagrams mapping the route ahead as well as colour photographs illustrating some of the highlights of one of Europe’s most historic and significant pilgrim walks.
