USA - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Usa Gettysburg

Our trip started in Toronto, Canada, and it was to be a two day car journey through New York State and Pennsylvania to the town of Gettysburg, just North of the Maryland border. The drive down takes you through some fantastic countryside including the Allegheny National Forest.

Gettysburg town itself has changed little over the years and some buildings still bear the scars of the battle. Surrounding the town is the battlefield and this is protected by the Gettysburg National Military Park.

There are a number of hotels in Gettysburg but we chose to stay at one of the country inns that are dotted around the Gettysburg area. The Baladerry Inn just south of Gettysburg was constructed in 1812 and was used during the battle as an Army of the Potomac field hospital, and evidence of this can still be seen in the house. A stay at this inn is definitely recommended.

We chose to tour the battlefield by car and we used one of the audio-guides that are available, which really helps to put the history of the battle in context with what you are seeing. The roads that you are guided around are in excellent condition and at the same time do not spoil the battlefield. Some people choose to walk or cycle but it is well to remember that the battlefield covers a large area so if you are not up to a good day's walk, then a car or coach tour is a good option.

Anyone visiting Pennsylvania or the USA in general should take time to visit Gettysburg. The country around this area is stunning with its amazing history to match. The comprehensive Moon Handbooks guide to Pennsylvania contains a decent section on Gettysberg and the Rand McNally map of Pennsylvania is all you need to find your way there.
