THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT!
Kyrgyzstan is the 'jewel of Central Asia' – a remote, hospitable and dramatically beautiful land. Criss-crossed by ancient Silk Routes, its early visitors include Alexander the Great and Genghis Kahn. Mighty ice-bound mountain peaks soften to flower-strew valleys; in summer, nomad shepherds take sheep, yaks and horses to high altitude pastures, living in yurts and drinking fermented mare's milk.
Saffia Farr, author of Revolution Baby: Motherhood and Anarchy in Kyrgyzstan, lived there for three years. Rowan Stewart and Susie Weldon are the well-travelled authors of Kyrgyz Republic. Between them, they will unlock the mysteries of this hidden land; suggesting travel possibilities for comfort-seekers and the adventurous alike and introducing the vivid culture, now re-emerging after decades of Soviet repression.
At this atmospheric evening there will be Kyrgyz costumes and music; shots of vodka; a stall of traditional felt crafts and a yurt brought all the way from a remote village in the mountains.
This event is held at Stanfords, Bristol.
