Indexed maps of Egypt and the Nile Valley, with additional plans of popular historic sites and street maps of Cairo and Alexandria. The Egypt map is at the relatively small scale of 1:3,500,000 showing main and secondary roads, principal railways, ferry links and airports. Elevation tinting shows the general relief (with major peak elevations stated) and irrigated areas are highlighted. Administrative area boundaries and names are marked and oil fields and pipelines are included. Latitude and longitude lines are at 2º intervals. More space is given to the Nile Valley map at 1:1,000,000 which included Nake Nasser in an inset. Here there is more road and settlement detail, and symbols indicate pyramids and other antiquities. Wells, wadis and seasonal lakes are marked and terrain variations are shown eg. irrigated land, sand desert and marsh. Latitude and longitude lines are at 1º intervals. Both maps are indexed, and both are represented in the cartography sample on this page. Additional larger scale maps show the archeological sites and other landmarks of Luxor and Thebes, the Giza pyramids and the North Saqqara pyramids.
On the reverse are a 1:25,000 street map of central Alexandria and a 1:15,000 street map of central Cairo. The latter covers about 45 sq km of the city and thus includes the City Walls, the Citadel, Gezira Island, most of Roda Island, Cairo railway station and a substantial part of the area west of the Nile eg. the zoo and university. Parks, built-up area and notable buildings are distinguished and railways, metro stations, river buses, bus stations, taxi stands, and tourist information sites are marked. Further symbols denote souks, shopping malls, hotels, embassies, post offices, places of worship, post offices, museums, sites of interest, public buildings, etc. An inset diagram shows the Cairo metro system. The map legend is in English and Arabic. Both maps are indexed for districts, streets, embassies and government buildings, hotels and other selected sites as appropriate. All the map legends are in English and Arabic.
A table of useful tourist information for Cairo is provided, including basic practicalities and addresses of selected embassies, ministries, airline and tourist information offices and hotels. There is also a panel of text introducing Egypt’s geography, history and attractions.
