Light, A5-size, high quality, paperback French language map/guides to the Sentiers de Grande Randonnée, the GR routes, a dense network of long-distance footpaths across the French countryside. Each topo-guide covers either a circular route, or part of a longer path, as indicated by the examples below.
The guides have colour extracts from IGN's 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 topographic survey cartography, overprinted with the route. The descriptions of the route are divided into short sections, according to the difficulty of the terrain, and are always placed next to the maps for easy reference. The text is in French, but a large amount of information is conveyed by symbols. A list of all the main points along the route indicates what facilities can be found there: public transport, food shops, and all types of accommodation (gîtes d'étape, campsites, mountain refuges, hotels, etc.) with addresses and telephone numbers.
How to choose the right topo-guide from the accompanying grid:
- each coloured section of a route is one topo-guide - there are no guides currently in print to the GRs shown in grey.
- the reference number of a guide is printed in a red box across the route, for example:
GR5 in the French Alps:
brown, ref. 504 = Lake Geneva to Col de la Croix du Bonhomme
green, ref. 530 = Col de la Croix du Bonhomme to Modane
blue, ref. 531 = Modane to Larche
green, ref. 507 = Larche to Menton/Nice

Raised relief maps of France:
Institute Géographique National, France's national survey organization, is renowned for their excellent series of 3-D plastic maps, covering all but the flattest parts of France, from Brittany, Normandy or the Paris region to a truly spectacular map of the Mont Blanc massif. Popular areas such as the Alps, the Pyrenees or Provence are covered at a variety of scales. These superb maps can be a beautiful decoration, an excellent educational aid or an unusual reminder of an interesting holiday.
