Three types of route - traffic-free, signposted and recommended - are marked on comprehensive street maps from Ordnance Survey or A-Z. The series is produced with the help of local cycle groups who provide information about short cuts, alleyways and various safe links. This information is then thoroughly surveyed to make sure it is accessible to all - one cyclist's cunning shortcut may be another's nightmare. All this surveying is of course done by bicycle.
