First researched in the Holy Year of 2004, and then updated ever since, this guide provides an up-to-date description of the 1570km cycle route from Le Puy in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, passing through Conques, Cahors, Roncesvalles, Burgos and Leon.
Cycling the St James way is increasingly popular, yet much of the route taken by walkers is unsuitable for cycling. By using roads with a good surface for touring cyclists, this guide attempts to follow the original pilgrimage route as closely as possible and offers the opportunity to visit every major church and shrine along the way with a few detours to outlying monasteries for good measure.
The route is broken into 27 easy stages, each an average distance of 50km (30 mile) and illustrated with gradient diagrams. All stages can be covered in one day, and by anyone of moderate fitness. The guide also includes routes from Santiago to Finisterre and Padron for those cyclists who want that little 'extra', and several variants are mentioned to cater for the fit and not-so-fit pilgrim.
There is a comprehensive kit list and an English-French-Spanish list of essential words for the journey, as well as details of accommodation in gites d'étape, chambres d'hôte, hotels, refugios and hostals.

About this series:
Cicerone Press are one of the UK's most well known and respected publishers of guidebooks for the outdoor enthusiast. Easily distinguished by their small pocket size, these books have been a favourite amongst walkers, climbers and cyclists for many years. Their guides for European and international destinations are highly popular amongst English-speaking tourists. The books are of the same high standard as the UK guides, with clear maps, detailed route descriptions and plentiful background information. The range is extensive and often they produce the only available English language guide available for a particular area or long distance route.
