The London Travel Card Map is a completely ‘to scale’ map of London, made entirely from used travel cards.
The use of the old paper travel cards, of which many are no longer in use, means the map is now impossible to re-create.
The work has been considered by the Tate Gallery and was almost bought by The London Transport Museum. It has also recently been featured in Time out magazine.
The London Travel Card Map is not only visually striking but geographically accurate; depicting residential areas, industrial space and all water and green spaces. Government buildings, public buildings and sports grounds are also represented. Postcodes and boroughs are noted and the map highlights all of the A-roads in and around greater London.
The map took over four years to create, using over 5000 used travel cards that had been collected from journeys all over central and greater London, between the years 2000-2010.The paper travel cards that were used make the map historically relevant, as they represent a pre Oyster card era and socially relevant as it depicts London before the 2012 Olympics and the re-development of East London.
All of these factors make the map highly valued.
The London Travel Card Map is a one off piece and always draws a crowd.
