East Dulwich and Peckham Rye in 1914 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family.Three versions for this area have been published, stretching from Redpost Lane (or Redpost Hill) eastward to Peckham Rye Park, and from Fenwick Road southward to Woodwarde Road and Goodrich Road. The 1868 map is still quite open, although Lordship Lane and Crystal Palace Road are shown laid out ready for building. East Dulwich is near the top centre of the map, with Goose Green, St John''s church and East Dulwich House. Peckham Rye is in the north-eastern quarter, with villas to the south including Manilla College, Charlton House and others. Friern Manor House in extensive grounds is near the foot of the map but by the 1914 map countless streets of houses have replaced it. The Peckham & Sutton railway runs through the western half of the map, including Champion Hill (later East Dulwich) and North Dulwich stations. Other features include Dulwich House on the 1868 map. The 1914 version has Constance Road Institution, Southwark Union Infirmary, James Allen''s School, Ruskin Manor, Alleyn''s School and the north part of Camberwell Cemetery.
About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping and reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4,340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes and many also include extracts from contemporary directories. Most maps cover about one mile (1.6kms) north/south, one and a half miles (2.4kms) across; adjoining sheets can be combined to provide wider coverage.
