London Hidden Interiors, a mighty 448-page glossy volume by Philip Davies with photos by Derek Kendall lets us into 180 of the buildings we all queue for every September during the capital’s highly popular Open Day, and a few more always out of bounds. Lavishly illustrated with over 1,700 excellent photos, the book covers a very diverse range of houses, institutions and styles, from 10 Downing Street and the gentlemen’s clubs of St James’s to hospital museums and shops which have retained their original fittings, from the grandeur of large aristocratic residences to the Art Nouveau interior of Rudolf Steiner House, the Art Deco splendours of the Park Lane Hotel or the Regent Palace Hotel, or the yet to be restored Master Shipwrights House and Office in the Old Royal Naval Dockyard in Deptford. Each location is accompanied by authoritative text offering the reader a unique insight into many previously unseen treasures.
