Stratford 1914 - 42.3

Stratford in 1914 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Three versions of this map cover the same area, stretching from Hackney Cut Navigation and the River Lea eastward to Romford Road and Carnarvon Road, and from Temple Mills Lane and Chandos Road southward to Lett Road and Langthorne Street. The maps have a lot of railway information, including Stratford, Maryland and Stratford Market stations, and the GER Railway Works, sidings and loops north of the station; an essential map for students of the Great Eastern Railway. The town is also shown in detail, with the 1867 version especially attractive. Other features include tramways, Stratford New Town, Stratford Marsh, Broadway, Waterworks River, Town Hall. Many more buildings are shown by 1914 when roads include High Street, The Grove, Leytonstone Road, Vicarage Lane, and countless more. Each map also has short extracts from contemporary directories.

Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping and reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4,340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes and many also include extracts from contemporary directories. Most maps cover about one mile (1.6kms) north/south, one and a half miles (2.4kms) across; adjoining sheets can be combined to provide wider coverage.
