In Wielkopolska, history is inextricably intertwined with the present. This is the cradle of Polish statehood, which can be seen by following the footsteps of the first Piasts through Gniezno, Ostrów Lednicki or Poznan. Some traditions stem from the fact of being neighbours with powerful Germany. Settlers from Bamberg brought the recipe for St. Martin''s croissants and infected Poles with their industriousness. Prussian rule, in addition to Germanisation, left behind a high agricultural culture. Nature was often subordinated to the thrifty Wielkopolska community, which created many urban centres with valuable facilities and... in 1919 won the Wielkopolska Uprising when our statehood was being reborn. After the nightmare of World War II, in 1956 a significant uprising against the communist authorities took place here, and today Poznan is also the first star of market cities.
Wielkopolska can certainly be considered a paradise for lovers of railways and old steam engines, and the lake district provides attractions for lovers of all kinds of water sports, fishing and recreational sailing.
